Always Was, Always Will Be: NAIDOC Week 2020

NAIDOC Week is finally here! Normally held in the first full week of July, this year’s NAIDOC Week has been pushed back to 8–15 November to ensure the safety of the participating communities in the context of COVID-19. The theme, “Always Was, Always Will Be”, encourages us to reflect on the ancient, enduring elements of the Aboriginal First Nations culture. It’s an invitation to all Australians to embrace the true history of this country, which dates back thousands of generations. Here’s why it’s more important than ever to celebrate our First Nations and become involved in NAIDOC Week 2020. NAIDOC Week: a day of recognitionNAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The name originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’ - this was the committee in charge of organising national activities during NAIDOC Week. Today we use the acronym to refer to this event. Its beginnings stretch back as far as 1938, when Indigenous Australians marched the streets of Sydney, protesting against Australia Day. This was originally known as the Day of Mourning. Between 1940 and 1955, it was moved to the first Sunday of July and named Aborigines Day, thus transitioning towards a celebration of culture. In 1991, it was extended to a whole week of recognition, rather than one day.NAIDOC Week is a way for Australians from all walks of life to pay their respects to the oldest continuing cultures on the planet: the First Nations. They were Australia’s first explorers, navigators, engineers, farmers, botanists, scientists, astronomers and artists. They were the ones who turned the harshest habitable continent into the rich land we are lucky to call “home” today.NAIDOC Week 2020Every year a theme is selected to reflect important issues for NAIDOC. This year’s theme is “Always Was, Always Will Be” - an opportunity to recognise and honour the First Nations that have inhabited and taken care of this continent for more than 65.000 years. It serves as an acknowledgement of the fact that this nation’s story didn’t begin with the first documented European contact, but with the hundreds of Nations and cultures that have left their footprints on this continent since the dawn of time.NAIDOC Week gives us a chance to learn from the ancient wisdom of The First People. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people don’t just live on this continent, they have a spiritual connection with it. Their intimate knowledge of the land and deep commitment to community have helped them adapt and evolve not just through climate change, catastrophic droughts, and rising sea levels, but also through the devastating consequences of European occupation and evolving technologies. They teach us a valuable lesson of survival and growth: true resilience is fueled by the power of community and a great respect for the land. And perhaps it’s the most important lesson to learn in these challenging times. Roogenic & NAIDOCAt Roogenic we take huge pride in our work with Indigenous communities around Australia. We work closely with our cherished communities and elders to source the best quality, organically grown and wild-harvested ingredients straight from the Australian outback. As a way of paying our respects to the First Nations and getting involved in NAIDOC Week, we are proud to be donating products to several NAIDOC events including the City of Stirling, Mercy Hospital, Teresa Miller’s Indigenous Centre, Curtin University & Kalgoorlie NAIDOC week celebrations.NAIDOC Week is an important time to acknowledge, connect and learn with the local Aboriginal community. In the midst of a humbling global crisis, it has become more obvious than ever that our strength lies in community, cultural identity and in working together, not against each other. You can find out more about this year’s NAIDOC on the official website.

MIX & MATCH WITH ROOGENIC TEAS - Roogenic

MIX & MATCH WITH ROOGENIC TEAS

How do you mix, match and create your favourite Roogenic Teas? At Roogenic we are so proud to hear our customers mixing, and matching Roogenic Tea blends, to maximise the benefits in their favourite cup of tea. If you're late to the party and haven't done much experimenting, let us help you out with some of our favourite mixes. WARNING: they are all delicious! Native Strawberry Tea & Women's Balance The Native Strawberry Tea has a bold berry flavour and ingredients that have been recognised to be high in antioxidants, which contribute to healthy hair and skin. Women's Balance has a herbal flavour with ingredients that have been recognised to be high in iron, making it suitable for women experiencing cramps and fatigue. Together the Teas make a fruity flavoured beverage with herbal notes (that is brilliant when chilled). It is also the perfect way to mix plants that contain iron for strength with plants that contain antioxidants for beauty. Native Detox Tea & Native Anti-Inflammitea Tea  If you're looking to create new healthy habits in 2020, combining our Native Detox Tea and Native Anti-Inflammitea Tea is a good place to start! Both blends have a Citrus-Earthy flavour that are wonderful when mixed together. In terms of health benefits, the Native Detox Tea has been designed for gut health and has received reviews including "My gut problems are going away" (Jody) and "I lost so much weight" (Lynette) while our Native Anti-Inflammitea has received reviews such as "Aches and pains have improved" (Robin) and "Profound improvement in inflammation" (Vanessa). Together they make the perfect tea combination for someone looking to get more active or healthy in 2020. Native Detox Tea & Native Strawberry Tea Without being controversial, we think this flavour combination could potentially be the most popular! There's no doubt that our Native Strawberry Tea is a favourite for the WHOLE family, but when combined with our Native Detox Tea, the fruity flavour also has a slight Earthiness with sour notes from the hibiscus (found in the Native Detox blend). The colour is also a beautiful deep red. We recommend serving hot or chilled and with fresh/frozen berries as a guilt free treat. It is also important to note that this blend is caffeine-free and great for every member of the family.

PREPARE. PRODUCE. PROVIDE

Due to their overwhelming success in recent years, the Djinda Ngardak Program is back for November 2019 at the Albany Entertainment Centre for Kinjarling Djinda Ngardak (“Albany Comes Alive Under the Stars” in the Noongar language). This amazing, youth-based community program includes opportunities for Indigenous students to receive training and mentorship from culinary professionals, Menang Elders, and Cultural leaders. KDN allowed students to explore cross-cultural sharing in connection with country and building knowledge of traditional plants, and ingredients. After a week of masterclasses were led by renowned chefs, including: Indigenous chef Reece Lardi; Paul Iskov (Owner and Chef of Fervor); Rohan Parks (Fervor); Melissa Palinkas (Owner and Chef of Young George); and Anna Gare (Media Personality and Cookbook Author) – the students were an integral part of a night showcasing local Indigenous art, music, dance, and fashion for more than 150 guests. Images sourced from prepareproduceprovide.org Roogenic was proud to support KDN this year, allowing the abili-tea of products for the event. We aided in sourcing local produce, organic ingredients commonly found in bush-tucker, and a range of our beautiful Teas. We would not be able to support these brilliant causes without your help! Your constant support of our Native Australian Bush Teas and Products allows us to maintain pillars in all communities of Australia – and by extension, so are you! We believe that the greatest educator is community and hold that very close to our heart. KDN is a brilliant opportunity for students all over Western Australia to network with those of similar interests, whilst also challenging themselves in personal development with a program built on cultural pride. Moorditj koort to all the facilitators and communities who were apart of KDN. To learn more about the Djinda Ngardak Program, and the people behind it, head over to www.prepareproduceprovide.org
